"London dropped her head to the ground, slowly trusting this stranger. She nibbled at the few strands of grass long enough to eat, keeping a careful eye on Sarah.

About fifteen minutes went by before Sarah realized London was not going to come any closer. Her trust in humans had been broken and it would take more than an apple to be repaired. Instead of holding the apple out, Sarah set it down on the ground a couple of feet away. If she did not get home soon, her father would be suspicious.

London eyed the apple before taking a step forward. She stretched out her neck and got a whiff of it. Then she took another hesitant step. Sarah held her breath. London was coming closer. It would take more time for London to trust her enough to eat from Sarah's hand, but this was definitely a start.

With a few more steps, London was close enough to the apple to grab it. She quickly plucked it from the ground and turned to walk a little farther away, putting some distance between herself and Sarah. Then she munched on the apple, enjoying her treat. She looked Sarah in the eye and lowered her head ever so slightly, as though thanking Sarah for the treat.

It had taken nearly a half hour of sitting, a few nice words, and lots of patience, but Sarah had accomplished the first step of earning London's trust. She would try again tomorrow. - Excerpt from the book
