"Able to catch himself before leaving the saddle, Jesse grabbed at the horn and Bright Star's mane frantically. Once he was safely seated back in the saddle, Jesse pulled on the reins bringing the gelding to an abrupt stop.
Bright Star stood still, breathing heavily, while Jesse scanned the forest line looking for whatever it was that had spooked the horse. Danielle came trotting to his side atop Lady Bug.
"What happened?" asked Danielle.
Jesse could barely hear her above the throbbing in his head. His heart still had not slowed down.
"Something spooked him," said Jesse after swallowing a few times. He patted Bright Star's damp neck as he continued to peer into the shady woods.
And then he saw it, a young, wild horse standing under a large spruce tree. It peered nervously at them through the thick, heavy lower branches. Jesse nodded towards it and slowly raised his arm to point. Following his finger, Danielle turned her head and squinted. She let out a gasp when she was able to make out the lanky dun in the shade." - Excerpt from the book
